Inspirational Nuggets
from a Minister's pen
One of my favorite stories in the Bible is the one told by Jesus about the prodigal son. In Luke 15:11, we have a young son, an older sibling, and a father. When we begin to read this proverb, we read of a younger son who was eager in life and had a sense of entitlement. The younger son wanted his inheritance from the father to live his own life, by his own rules. Now the Bible doesn’t provide the age of the younger son, but his actions suggest that he was immature---he was like many of us when we first entered into adulthood, we knew everything and couldn't wait to live life by our own terms.
Later in Luke 15:13-14, we see just how immature the younger son was. In the KJV Bible, it states that he lived a "riotous" life (in other words, he was out of control) and as a result, the younger son spent all he had. Unfortunately for him, at this time a “severe famine” fell upon the land. In a matter of days, the younger son went from living "the good life", having more than enough, to living and eating with the swine. He was at the end of his rope before he remembered who he was; he remembered that he had a father who had plenty and as such, he decided to go back home. When we continue to Luke 15:20, we see a father’s love and compassion toward his wayward child. How Jesus laid out this parable is still applicable to our lives today. If you have lost your way because of lust and sin, the Father is waiting to receive you back with love and compassion. God does not have an, “I told you so” or “If you would have listened” attitude toward us; instead, God showers us with forgiveness, love, and compassion. In addition to His love and compassion, God is also our intercessor between our need for forgiveness, and those that believe we are not deserving of it. As we continue to read at Luke 15:29-30, we read accusations and a sense of entitlement, but this time from the older son. The father, being the good father he was, interceded between the younger son's need for forgiveness and his older brother's accusations (it was clear that the older brother thought he was more deserving of the blessings bestowed upon the younger son). If we lose our way, God is still present and willing to receive us back unto Himself. God will not accuse you or throw you away, but on the contrary, He will show love and have compassion upon you. In addition, God will be your defense against all that believe you are unworthy of forgiveness. If you have lost your way, return back home to God! Minister ROH
